My most recent custom order was for a very cute Golden Doodle named Hildy. While Hildy’s owner was searching Etsy, she found my listing for an Angel Blue Peachskin Couture Dog Dress with pick ups. She instantly inquired about getting a similar couture dog dress custom made for Hildy.

With the owner’s wedding coming up in June she wanted something very special for Hildy, who would also be attending the wedding. After receiving Hildy’s measurements and the desired color choice I was able to get started.

I love to use peachskin fabric on special occasion dress for pets as the micro fiber fabric is soft, smooth, and moderately wrinkle-resistant. It’s also great for any season and weather due to its light weight and texture.

I was able to find a red peachskin locally along with all of the accents needed for the waist and for the pick ups. I purchased red and off white rose accents for the pick ups and the waist and I was able to find off white pearls to utilize as additional accents around the dress waist.

Within a week I was able to complete Hildy’s custom dog dress for her owner’s very special occasion in June. Hildy Dress (2) TBD

The Cottage Mama is having her first ever sewing contest next month! After browsing through the patterns that could be used for the contest I fell in love with the Charlotte Apron Dress pattern. You can either purchase this pattern as a PDF file for immediate download or purchase the paper pattern and wait for it to be shipped. I opted for the paper pattern as I have yet to figure out a good way to store and organize my PDF patterns after I print them.

I really wanted a vintage feel for my dress so a trip to my local fabric store was much needed for just the right fabric.

Fabric Charlotte Apron Dress

Much to my surprise the first fabric my daughter picked up was perfect. A floral Keepsake Calico with bluebirds, Birds of a Feather. Selecting the apron fabric was going to be a breeze. After a little searching we found a blue raspberry and natural look cotton for the apron. For a vintage feel, I trimmed the apron and dress bottom in a white eyelet trim. My dress is complete with turquoise Dritz Belle buttons. I just love the way these buttons make the blue raspberry color in the dress pop.

The buttons really needed to pop on this printed fabric so I used a shade of blue to match the bluebirds as well as the blue in the apron. I wanted to do a lace trim instead of the contrasting fabric trim so I used a white eyelet since I had plenty on hand.20140824_150923aI could not be any happier with the way my dress turned out. I have a cute little model lined up for a photo shoot so I can submit my entry to the contest.

If you are interested in entering the contest you can find more information at The Cottage Mama Sewing Contest blog also be sure to check out her amazing patterns available from her website The Cottage Mama.

Update 9-12-14

Here is my final submission for The Cottage Mama sewing contest. I am deeply saddened by our recent monsoon weather that prevented us from doing our scheduled photo shoot outdoors. However, I am thrilled with what we did get with my beautiful model. There are so many wonderful and amazing contest submissions. I saw so many wonderful ideas I would have never thought about doing let alone trying. I am looking forward to doing another sewing contest in the future.

I am even more eager to sew another pattern from The Cottage Mama pattern collection very soon. So easy to follow and obviously by the picture above the end results are awesome. If you follow my blog you may have seen my post for The Cottage Mama book release last year. If you do not have this book yet it is a must have!

One of my favorite things to make is tutu’s. I enjoy the variety of colors and the many ways the colors can be combined. The accessories to go with the tutu’s are so much fun. A simple tutu can be transformed into an amazing costume or dress for special occasions such as birthdays and weddings.

With nearly twenty five years of sewing experience I am so thankful to still have the ability to do what I love today. In 1989 I started sewing as a young girl and knew instantly this was the job for me. I can do what I enjoy and yet it never feels like work.  What could be better?

Porcelain Doll

Often times I am asked how did I start sewing. The answer is once I made the first thing I was hooked. The first doll dress I made by hand was cut from scratch and hand sewn. You can see that dress in my blog “Through the Years“.
Growing up my mother made things for us just as her mother did for her children. My great grandmother made porcelain dolls and each doll always had the most fantastic dresses. I will never forget the first doll I received as a young child on Christmas morning. When I was in high school my great grandmother shared her dress pattern with me and I was able to make my own dress for a finished doll. I still have that doll along with the other dolls today. I will always cherish the dolls not only because my great grandmother made them but because the inspiration they have given to me to pursue my passion for sewing.

Today I still enjoy creating one of a kind items just as I enjoyed making this one of a kind dress from my great grandmother’s pattern. You can learn more about me and my accomplishments here.

Being a flower girl can be a special event for any little girl. But having your flower girl dress custom made can  be just as exciting. Finding the perfect dress for a flower girl or any other members of the bridal party can be a challenge for the bride. Having the ability to get your desired dress custom made is a great option for any bride to be.
The first dress pictured is the customer sample picture from a local retailer. I was able to create the exact dress as well as add wider straps and a little layer to the bodice to edge. In the end the dress was a perfect fit for the flower girl needing no additional alterations.

When ordering dresses even after getting measured you may still need alterations. With a custom made dress you are fitted to your dress as it is constructed. Saving time and money in the end.

It’s always important to remember custom made does not mean your dress will be cheaper or more expensive than other retailers. Depending on the fabric selection and additional details to the dress your finished product can be cheaper, more expensive, or equal to a store purchased dress.

Last year I had the privilege to make a custom doctors coat for a Yorkie named Rocky. Everyday Rocky goes to work with his owner who happens to be a doctor. While at work Rocky gets to wear his name badge around his collar but what Rocky really needed was a lab coat like his owner wears.
To surprise Rocky’s owner with a custom made lab coat her friend set out on a hunt for someone to create this one of a kind lab coat for Rocky. Through several failed attempts in getting someone to make a custom made lab coat she finally found my web-site and sent me a photo of what she was looking for.

Instantly I knew I could make this lab coat and was able to get started right away. Though challenging, making this custom lab coat for Rocky was a lot of fun. Creating a pattern for custom made items is not always easy or possible. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to make this for Dr. Rocky. Now while at work every day he will certainly fit right in.

One of my favorite sewing projects is when someone sees and item in my shop for a little girl and they want one identical for their pet. This really is fun to recreate that one unique item to another for someones four legged friend.

Some would think that recreating a child’s dress would be just as easy since the pets dress is smaller. Honestly, it takes my twice as long to create these dresses for pets. It is a challenge as they do not get and elastic bodice or waist on their dresses. Many things have to be taking into consideration: pets size especially. It is a challenge that I love especially when I see the finished project.

At this time the little girl tutu dress is still available in our etsy shop.

Last year as I was shopping at my favorite fabric store, I was chatting with the manager about what I’m making and she’s telling me about her projects she’s working on. She then ask if I have ever made a pillowcase dress. I said a what? (As you can tell I didn’t grow up in the depression era) She explained to me how to make a dress literally from a pillow case. I thought this was the craziest thing I have ever heard of. Leaving the store I never thought twice about this strange dress again. As time goes by I begin to notice these dresses everywhere. And then the custom orders start coming in this spring for them. I never thought in a million years I would be making these but they are really so popular.

This past weekend my boyfriend’s father came over to visit with us. I cooked up a big lunch and we sat at the table and chatted away. He has the most fascinating stories I could just listen all day. He begins to tell us a story about needing to get school clothes for all five children. Keep in mind, this was nearly 60 years ago. With very little money their mother Sue purchased a pillowcase pattern from the store. Since she had bad eyes and couldn’t see well enough to sew, she would cut out the dresses and he did the sewing. They made a great team! The next day they sent one of the daughter’s off to school in her new dress making sure to give her a belt so the other children wouldn’t make fun of her. As she came home to their surprise she was smiling ear to ear as all the children loved her new dress.

This story really makes you sit back and think about how lucky most of us are today as we can dress this simple dress up with such beautiful ribbons, laces, and other embellishments. So lucky to have had someone think this up so long ago. Makes you wonder if they ever thought it would come back like this.

Last year my baby brother & his crafty wife had their first child. Upon her arrival I began seeing her pictures day after day through Facebook. One day she was in a little bitty tutu made by her mommy.  I thought that was the most precious thing I had seen in a long time. After all my daughter is 14 now, and my how things have changed.

The last few years I have been making dog clothes and I just knew my little Yorkie Poo Felecity needed her own tutu. So finally I made it. Yes I know what a procrastinator.

I really enjoyed making this and can not believe it took me so long to make one. I can not wait to create more in the weeks to follow to add to my store. The greatest thing about these tutus is there are so many different ways you can make them. The color selection is unreal and the many different types of trim that can be added is limitless.
For those if you interested in checking out my sister in laws tutus,
she has recently started her own SAHM business.
